Is a team’s logo offensive?
There was talk recently that for Spring Training the Braves would be wearing hats with the “Screaming Indian” logo. They used that logo from their first year in Atlanta in 1967 until the switch to their signature “A” in 1990. This talk ended because some people consider the “Screaming Indian” logo offensive to Native Americans. This is a controversial topic.
But is the logo really offensive? It is not meant to be racist, although it could come off that way. This is obviously a very controversial topic. I think it honors the different cultures we have in this country with a well-meaning caricature. The “Screaming Indian” is a part of the Braves’ history no matter what.
Having throwback uniforms is good for the team becasue a lot of fans like them and it offers more variety of uniforms during the season. A change in appearance might be good for the Braves, who are looking for a new identity now that veteran star Chipper Jones is retired.
I love the Braves logo I’ve grown up with but it would have been cool to see them recall the “Screaming Indian” for spring training. Again, this is a controversial topic, but what are your thoughts? Is this logo, or any Native American related logo offensive?
